Overview

Legal Lens is a five-part digital documentary series and engagement campaign about how the law shapes — and is shaped by — the lives of everyday Americans.

The complex legal system that governs our lives is opaque to most Americans. Legal Lens aims to demystify that system and show how regular citizens can use legal remedies to improve their lives, strengthen their communities, and even shape the law itself.

The project brings together an exceptionally talented, diverse team of Harvard law students, documentary filmmakers, and journalism partners in a first-of-its-kind collaboration. Each episode in Legal Lens centers on an individual, everyday person whose experience illustrates a fundamental principle of our legal system. Each episode tackles one of five social issues:

CLIMATE CHANGE. A working-class single mom activist and a climate scientist are suing Exxon Mobil, to hold them accountable for decades of misinformation and inaction on climate change.

PRISON REFORM. Is incarceration synonymous with punishment? Not according to the law. An activist sheriff in Middlesex is taking a therapeutic approach to jail time and the results are stunning.

IMMIGRATION. One immigrant is organizing a counter-attack to President Trump’s cancelation of Temporary Protected Status for more than 300,000 immigrants, threatening to send them back to devastated countries they haven’t seen in decades.

GENTRIFICATION. Why does gentrification displace the working poor? One reason is that the law defines a house like any other property, ignoring the true meaning of “home.” But zoning laws provide levers that communities can use to push back.

PREGNANCY DISCRIMINATION. A mother-to-be found out the hard way that the law didn’t protect her from being harassed by her employer for getting pregnant… so she helped pass a bill that protects others from the same fate.

Impact

The project’s primary goals are:

  1. to enhance the public’s understanding of our legal system and their place in it;
  2. to provide a fresh perspective on some of the most pressing social issues of our times; and
  3. to give a voice to some of America’s top young legal minds as they are about to enter the profession and help them understand how media can be a tool for advancing public debate about important issues.

The series premiered on the Boston Globe’s website with additional distribution on its social media platforms. Each film was accompanied by supplemental material, including Op-Ed pieces written by the students and published in The Globe, as well as on-camera interviews in which they share insights gained through the filmmaking process. The World Channel, a national public media television channel available to more than 60% of US homes, has agreed to distribute a television program comprised of the five documentaries to public media stations across the country.
